48 Horticulture Introduction to Organic Certification To export to USA, USDA NOP Certification will be required. To export to Japan, JAS Certification may be required. Please contact one of the AQIS accredited Certification Bodies for further details for export to these and other destinations. Primary Producers and broader industry is challenged with multiple audits, complex quality management systems and associated costs. Those involved in the organic industry of course are facing higher costs due to the extra layer of external auditing required for organic certification. When choosing a Certification Body, it is worth considering the following; Australian Organic Produce and Processed Product are undergoing continued growth in demand for high quality organic product for both domestic and export markets. Consumers are aware of the health benefits and environmental benefits of sound organic agricultural practices. The fear of the unknown (and the known) in regards to Genetic Modification, pesticide and other chemical use, artificial fertilizer use etc, is very real to Consumers and Primary Producers alike. For Primary Producers who are interested organic certification the due process to follow is; • Application for Certification with an AQIS accredited Certification Body. • An initial audit is completed and reviewed against the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce Edition 3.3. • Pre-certification is then obtained. This lasts for a period of one year. No claim to organic status can be made during this period. • A second audit is done against the National Standard. • In-Conversion Certification is then obtained upon completion and review of a successful audit. This lasts for a period of two more years. An In-Conversion organic status can then be claimed for certified Organic In-Conversion product. • Annual Audits against the National Standard are completed and reviewed. • After 3 years of continuous Organic Certification, the product certified can be claimed to be Certified Organic. This can result in a considerable saving in time and over all costs. • Market Recognition. All AQIS Accredited Certification Bodies are recognised as being able to certify organic Primary Producers / Processors to the Australian National Standard. • Expertise and competence of auditors. • The ability of the Certification Body to audit against the USDA NOP / JAS Standards if applicable.
