59 Export & Import Port of Melbourne: Growing together Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) is the strategic manager of the Port of Melbourne, Australia’s largest container port, which is a significant strategic asset to the state of Victoria. As a gateway for international trade, the port benefits primary producers through the facilitation and support of trade related activities. The Port of Melbourne has been at the forefront of preparing for – and adapting to – the new era of containerisation since the late 1960s. A generation later, in January 2007, Melbourne achieved an historic milestone to become the first port in Australia to handle 2 million TEU in a twelve month period. This milestone came less than a decade after Melbourne reached 1 million TEU in September 1997. Doubling our container throughput in just ten years demonstrates the significant economic growth and increase in international trade volumes. The Port of Melbourne is now in its seventeenth consecutive year of growth and in 2008/09 we expect to handle well over 2.2 million TEU. Despite the prevailing drought conditions across much of south-eastern Australia, a high Australian dollar and strong economic growth has ensured that international trade remains strong. International container trade has continued to grow steadily at around 7%. The farming sector contributes significantly to the trade through the Port of Melbourne.
