Farm Guide VIC : 2008 - 2009
62 Export & Import The project will result in better economies of scale in shipping, meaning more cargo in less ship movements. This will lead to improved costs and help make exports more competitive. The project involves dredging sections of the existing Great Ship Channel at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, parts of South Channel, and the Port of Melbourne, Williamstown and Yarra River channels. The middle of the Bay is naturally deeper and does not require dredging. Other works related to the project include; berth upgrades, installation of new navigational aids and the protection of utility services within the channels. Channel deepening will ensure Melbourne remains cost effective and efficient. This will protect jobs, keep our exports competitive, drive new investment and industry and ensure strong, ongoing business confidence in Victoria. The Port of Melbourne has 34 commercial berths at five docks, river wharves, Gellibrand Pier at Williamstown and Station Pier at Port Melbourne.
